Chawli Dal Methya in Marathi
A delicious vegetable preparation made of chawli leaves and toovar dal. Flavors of garlic and fenugreek seeds make it more palatable.
Ingredients:
1 bunch Chawli vegetable
1/4 cup toovar dal
3-4 dry red chilies
8-10 garalic cloves, sliced
2-3 kokum pieces
1 tbsp oil
For tempering: 15 to 20 Fenugreek seeds, 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, 1/4 tsp hing, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp jaggery
Curry leaves
Salt to taste
Method:
1) Pick the vegetable and use only leaves. Wash and finely chop leaves. (approx 1.5 to 1.75 cup chopped)
2) Pressure cook toovar dal upto 1 to 2 whistles only. We don't want to cook dal completely.
3) Heat oil into a pan. Add methi seeds and garlic. Saute over medium heat. Once garlic turns reddish, add mustard seeds, hing, turmeric powder, curry leaves and red dry chilies.
Saute for few seconds.
4) Then add chopped vegetable and salt. Cook over medium heat. Once vegetable is cooked, add half-cooked toovar dal. Add little water only if required.
5) Add kokum and simmer vegetable. Add jaggery. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Serve hot.
(It doesn't require any masala. However check the taste and add your choice of spice blend)
Tip:
1) Just before serving prepare tadka into tadka pan. Heat 1 tbsp oil, some garlic, red chilies and hing. Pour it over prepared vegetable. Then serve.
