Rava Ghavan in Marathi

Yield: 8 to 10 small pancakes
Time: 20 Minutes

rava ghavan, sooji pancakes, semolina pancakes, Indian pancakesIngredients:
1 cup Sooji (semolina)
3/4 cup Yogurt
1/2 cup Water
1/2 cup Onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup Tomato, finely chopped
2 Green chilies, finely chopped
1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
1/2 tsp Ginger paste
1/4 cup Cilantro, finely chopped
Salt to taste
Pinch of Baking Soda
1/4 cup Oil

Method:
1) Make buttermilk by whisking yogurt and water together. Add Sooji and mix well. Add more buttermilk to adjust the consistency. Mixture should not be too thin or too thick in consistency. Keep it covered for 1 and 1/2 hour.
2) After 1 hour, add onion, tomato, chilies, Ginger paste, cumin, cilantro, salt and baking soda to the Sooji mixture. Mix nicely.
3) Heat a nonstick tawa. Once tawa is hot, drizzle 1/2 tsp little oil. Pour 1 big spoonful of batter, but do not spread on the tawa. Make 1 to 2 cm thick pancake. Cover the tawa and let it cook for a minute on one side, flip and cook the other side.
Serve hot with Coconut Chutney

  5. Hello Vaidehi,
Your recipes are great and so is your blog. Need your assistance in figuring out something.
I tried making this recipe and it didnt come out well. The pancakes wouldn't set properly. After adding a little rice flour I thought it would help, but they were still the same. I used the exact measures as you have mentioned. Could help me figure out. Thanks a lot! and best wishes.

  6. Hi
It might be the baking soda or the batter consistency. The above recipe requires very tiny amount of baking soda. A little extra may ruin the dish. Also, when did you add baking soda? It should be added just before making pancakes and not during the resting time.
Note: It is better to make slightly thick batter, because after adding soda, batter tends to become little loose in constancy.

  7. Hello Vaidehi, apology to reply in late. I added the baking soda just before I started making them, when the first one didnt turn up well. I added it along with the rice flour, and the consistency was also slightly thick. Nevertheless taste wise they were delicious.. Thanks for your reply!

  8. Hi, Is it ok if I made the rava buttermilk mixture overnight refrigerated and work with rest of the steps next morning?? just to skip the 1&1/2 hour of waiting process??

    1. Hi Apeksha

It is okay. But the batter should be come to room temperature before proceeding. If you try making pancakes using cold mixture, the pancakes wont set properly on tawa. They will break or the texture wont be good. So make sure the batter comes to room temp.
